Theoretical Framework
Learning Objective: To apply the theoretical framework to media texts.

What is Theoretical Framework?
  • Media Language
  • Media Insitutions
  • Media Audiences
  • Media Representation
Media Language:

This covers terms used, how texts are constructed and the messages conveyed. It includes:
  • Camerawork- shot type, angle, movement
  • Soundtrack- what is included?
  •  Mise-en-scene- what is included?
  • Editing- transitions, pace & special effects
Camerawork:

Includes shot type, shot angle, and camera movement.

Soundtrack:

In a film or TV show, the soundtrack is dialogue, sound effects, voiceover and music. It can be diegetic and non-diegetic.

Mise-en-scene:

The arrangement of the scenery, props, costume, hair and make-up, lighting, actor positioning, body language and facial expression on the stage of a theatrical production or on the set of a film.

Editing:

Editing is the process of selecting and preparing written, visual, audible, and film media used to convey information. It is any post production work on a moving image.

Venom Trailer- Editing:

In the venom trailer, editing was used to fade in to the next camera shot. As the trailer becomes more intense, the shots fade more quickly.
Another way editing was used was with the CGI of the Venom character to make him more life like and real to the viewer. CGI was also used to make the explosions bigger.

Institution
Learning Objective: To understand the concept of ownership and regulation.

Institution Definition:
Who makes what and for whom. The owners companies and people to produce, distribute and govern media.

Types of media owned by News Corp:

  • Books
  • Newspapers (Worldwide)
  • Magazines
  • Music
  • Radio
  • Sport
  • Film Studios
  • TV
  • Internet
It is important to know who owns the media because they are able to influence you and if you read or watch lots of newspapers or TV programs that are owned by the same mother-company then they are more likely to use the same opinions throughout the media they own. Also, The more companies you own, the more power you have over rules and people. Also, If you wanted to make a movie you would have all the recourses that you need without having to split the profit with other people.

Audience
Learning objective: To identify how media text targets a specific audience.

A print advert aimed at a teenage audience:

This print advert is designed for teenage girls because it uses a bright eye-catching background and has the words 'This Girl Can' on it. the person on roller-scates  is a teenage girl also.
A film poster aimed at a female adult audience:

This poster is aimed at an adult female audience as it has two women on the front. It also uses colours such as pink and light blue which are stereotypically associated with females.

Video game cover aimed at teenage boys:

This cover would appeal to a teenage boy as it uses blue and black colours. it also seams like an adventure/ action game which boys are more likely to play.

Representation
Learning Objective: To explore the idea of representation in the media.

Representation is how you portray something or someone in a particular way. Many representations may look realistic because media producers use stereotypes to make them easily recognisable. It is showing a fake reality to the audience.

We can look at different areas of representation:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Sexuality
  • Nationality
  • Disability
  • Class
  • Race
Stereotypes:

In this photo, the three girls are all different but can be stereotypes into different categories. The girl on the right is shown as the organised, smart one who doesn't really care about her appearance. The girl on the left looks like someone who cares more about how they look than their grades and is the leader. The one in the middle looks like she is strong and can stand up for herself.

Media Language:

Camera Shots:

This low angle camera shot has been used to show that the character has power. The silhouette of the person against the background makes you focus on the person making them stand out.

T
his eye-level close up camera shot shows the facial expression of anger and hatred on the characters face. The colours are also dark which shows us that this film is an adventure/ action film.

Soundtrack (voiceover, sound & music):

In this trailer, as the music gradually gets faster and more intense, the speed in which the shots switch increases. The voiceover is there throughout the whole trailer giving the audience the vague outline of the storyline. The sound effects have been added to make explosions
louder and more realistic.

Colour:

Red, black and orange are the main colours used in the trailer. This is because they are the main colours associated with the dystopian/ adventure movie genre.

What Institution made it and what are they trying to achieve:

The trailer was made for the film industry and they made it to advertise their film so people will come and watch it so they make money.

Target Audience:

I think the target audience is people within the ages of 12 and 35. I think that most of the audience would be female because their is a female hero that girls and women might look up to.

How has the character been represented:

the character (Katniss Everdeen) has been represented as strong and independent. We know this because of the way she looks after herself and her sister.
