Key Terminology
Learning Objective: To review and explore key subject terms and concepts.
- Connotation- A hidden, attached or associated meaning of an image, symbol, colour etc.
- Conventions- The unwritten rules of a media text: the things that we have come to expect from media products.
- Genre- The type, category or kind of media product.
- Ideology- The ideals, values and beliefs that are promoted and encouraged by a media text.
- Institution- The company responsible for creating and/or distributing the media product.
- Representation- The way a person or idea is made to look, or is shown, to the audience.
- Target Audience- The specific people a product is aimed at.
- Text- The actual media product being studied.
Connotation:
- Red Rose- Blood, love, death, rugby
- A Football- Sport, team, winner, looser, active
- Baseball Cap- America, baseball, hats, popularity, disguise, gangs
- Stethoscope- Doctor, nurse, illness, heart, medical
- Gun- Murder, death, blood, sacrifice, police, weaponry, soldier, red
- The Colour Pink- Girl, happiness, rose quartz, joy
Conventions/Genre:
- Romantic Comedy: Funny jokes, romance, innuendo, disaster/accident
- Action: Fights, drama, violence, car chase
- Horror: Jump scares, blood, psychopathic killer, villain, hero
- Children's: Child-friendly jokes (slap stick), no swearing, colourful characters, simple storyline, bright colours
Ideology:
On this Men's Health magazine front cover, they are promoting and ideology of health and fitness. The man on the front is thin and muscly. It also tells you that if you read the magazine you can look like the man on the front.
Institution:
- East Enders ( BBC )
- Fortnite ( Epic Games)
- Avengers ( Marvel)
Representation:
The Lady on the rights stereotype is dumb blonde and a gold-digger. She looks like a stereotypical sassy, american girl. The man on the lefts stereotype is a goofy nerd who is clever. He wears glasses because it is stereotypical for nerds to wear glasses.
