Article: With 8 million pieces of plastic pollution entering the worlds oceans every day and the average piece of plastic taking around 500 years to decompose into micro plastics; plastic pollution is one of the biggest issues faced by the modern world.
To help fight the plastic pollution issue, schools are being urged by the UK government education secretary Damian Hinds to 'eradicate single use plastic items and consider using environmentally friendly alternatives' by 2022. Hinds is urging schools across the UK to follow the lead of Georgeham Primary School in Devon- the first UK school to be awarded a single use plastic free status.
The school was the first of the 1000 UK schools that have been awarded their plastic free school status by Cornwall based plastic pollution charity Surfers Against Sewage. In order to get a plastic free status for their school, there are 5 objectives that students must complete including challenging both the government by making contact with their local MP; and the industries responsible for the plastic packaging that ends up polluting the environment. As well as this, the school must conduct a 'Trash Mob' to clean up the litter found on the school site. Students must also create a 'plastic free action group'. Within this group, students must commit to removing at least 3 different single use plastic products from their school and reduce individual single use plastic waste.
With so many different alternatives to single use plastic, reducing your plastic waste is one easy way to reduce your impact on the environment.
